Client: Base Structures (2006)

Multi-conic grandstand roof

The Mound Stand has long been regarded as one of the iconic buildings at Lord's Cricket Ground. The tensile membrane material had aged badly and required replacement. Tony Hogg Design's specialist engineering capability was employed to use more advanced techniques than those used in the original design. Current best practice and contemporary materials have been used to reinstate the roof structure.

It is 80 metres long and 20 metres wide with eleven interconnecting conical membrane forms. The fabric is PVC coated polyester, the cables are galvanized and membrane attachment components are primarily stainless steel or aluminium. The original support structure, which has been retained, is painted mild steel.

We meticulously surveyed the structure before it was dismantled to create a new computerised membrane model. Our model had to match the contours of the original roof for planning purposes. We developed and engineered a new cable system and fabric attachment details. Our details and drawings were used to fabricate all of the new components. We also worked with our client to develop the programme and procedure for both dismantling the old and erecting the new roof.
